Monkey & Chops Star Charts are a fun and interactive way to set behavioural goals for your child. They can be used to encourage positive social behaviour or to refine practical skills, such as using the toilet. By allowing your child to set their own developmental goals, they will feel empowered, motivated and excited by the process, whilst enjoying the sense of achievement when the goals are reached.
The Monkey & Chops Star chart includes a large chart which can be attached to the bedroom door, wall or your child’s special area of the house. Also included is a sheet of fun and colourful star stickers to attach to the main chart. The chart has space for up to four behavioural targets to work on at any time to ensure that daily successes can be achieved. How To Use The Star Chart
The Monkey & Chops Star chart enables parents and children to monitor the progress of behavioural development on a daily basis. Behavioral goals may be listed along the left hand panel using a whiteboard marker for text and/or the task stickers for visual prompts. The task stickers provided are a great way to remind your child of the behavioural goal associated with each row and they can monitor their progress every day. Each time they successfully complete an allocated task on their Star chart, they earn a star sticker. By encouraging your child to stick the star on their chart all by themselves in the appropriate row, they will have the opportunity to feel a sense of achievement every day. Once they reach the end of each row a “small reward” may be offered as an incentive to complete their self-allocated goal. The incentive of a “large reward” may be offered for completing the entire chart.
The excitement associated with achieving stars each day can become a good incentive for promoting learning in each of the behavioral areas. However, it is also wise to talk to your child whilst they are progressing through their chart as to how the progress makes them feel. By asking them how it makes them feel, they will be encouraged to come up with the answers and think about the emotions associated with successful behavior. This encourages them to feel good about themselves and what they are achieving, rather than only feel good about collecting the external reward.
Ownership And Success
By allowing your child to set their own behavior goals, they will take greater ownership of the star chart process and feel empowered by their daily achievements. Once the system is established, allow them to tell you when they’ve fulfilled a behavioural goal so that the process, as with the behavioural skill that they are aiming to refine, becomes self-regulating. Let them reward themselves by adding their sticker to their own chart and ask them what reward they would like (within reason) at the end of each row. Successful development of behavioural goals will come through allowing your child to own the behaviour, own the star and triumph in their own achievements along the way.
So go ahead and develop your Star Chart with your child/children and help then to refine behavioural skills and enjoy the success of achieving goals along the way. Click on the links above to view the Monkey & Chops Star Chart and task stickers and purchase one for your child today!
